Pinelands North pupils earn three golds and two silvers at Eskom Expo

Five pupils from Pinelands North Primary School impressed at the Eskom Science Expo earlier last month, earning three gold medals and two silver medals among 240 participants from schools across the region.

The pupils presented projects covering a range of thought-provoking scientific and social topics, according to a statement from the school.

Five projects, five medals

The projects explored the potential use of greywater as an alternative to freshwater for growing crops, the influence of parenting styles on children’s social development, and the impact of team structures on cooperation and success.

Other projects focused on the design of a self-sufficient hydroelectric generator and the effect of repeated practice when learning cubing algorithms.

Special awards for young researchers

The team also received several special awards. These included Best Junior in the Social Sciences Category, Best Junior in the Mathematics Category, the Living Maths Award and the Two Oceans Aquarium Award.

Pinelands North Coding and Science teacher Tamsin Carelse said, “Science begins with a question, but it is the courage to explore that question that leads to discovery. Watching our learners turn their curiosity into meaningful investigations and then see their ideas recognised at this level has been incredibly rewarding.”
